What is ABA therapy?

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a scientific, evidence-based approach that helps children learn new skills and reduce challenging behaviors. ABA therapy uses positive reinforcement and individualized strategies to teach communication, social interaction, daily living skills, and academic abilities. ABA works by breaking down complex skills into smaller, manageable steps and teaching them systematically. Our Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) create personalized treatment plans based on your child's unique strengths, challenges, and goals. Sessions are fun, play-based, and tailored to how your child learns best. ABA is considered the gold standard for supporting children with autism, but it's also effective for children with other developmental needs and even neurotypical children who need behavioral support.

Who can benefit from ABA therapy?

While ABA is most commonly known for helping children with autism spectrum disorder, it can benefit any child who needs support with communication and language development, social skills and making friends, following routines and transitions, self-care skills like dressing, hygiene, and eating, reducing challenging behaviors such as tantrums or aggression, school readiness and academic skills, or focus and attention. At Wave, we work with children with autism, developmental delays, behavioral challenges, and neurotypical children whose families want support with specific skills or behaviors.

What does ABA therapy look like in practice?

ABA therapy at Wave is individualized, play-based, and family-centered. Sessions typically include one-on-one time with a trained therapist working on specific goals, play-based activities that make learning fun and engaging, parent coaching so you can reinforce skills throughout the day, data collection to track progress and adjust strategies as needed, and natural environment teaching using everyday situations and items your child enjoys. Our therapists come to your home, so your child learns in their most comfortable environment. We incorporate your family's routines, preferences, and goals into every session.

How many hours of ABA therapy does my child need?

The number of therapy hours depends on your child's individual needs, goals, and insurance coverage. Some children benefit from 10-15 hours per week, while others may need 25-40 hours per week for more intensive support.During the initial assessment, our BCBA will evaluate your child and recommend an appropriate number of hours. We work with your insurance provider to determine what's covered under your plan. We also consider your family's schedule and preferences to create a realistic therapy plan that works for everyone.

What is the difference between ABA and other therapies?

ABA is often used alongside other therapies like speech therapy, occupational therapy, and physical therapy. ABA focuses on behavior, communication, social skills, and daily living through applied behavioral science. Speech therapy focuses specifically on communication, language development, and feeding. Occupational therapy focuses on fine motor skills, sensory processing, and self-care activities. Physical therapy focuses on gross motor skills, strength, and movement. At Wave, we believe in a collaborative approach. If your child receives other therapies, we work closely with those providers to ensure everyone is supporting your child's goals consistently.

What is ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy)?

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a therapeutic approach that helps people accept difficult emotions and commit to positive actions aligned with their values. While traditional ABA focuses on changing behaviors, ACT helps families develop psychological flexibility and resilience. At Wave, we incorporate ACT principles into our parent coaching and family support services. This means we help parents accept challenges without being overwhelmed by them, stay present with their child even during difficult moments, identify their values as parents and commit to actions that reflect those values, and build resilience and self-compassion. ACT is especially helpful for parents who feel stressed, overwhelmed, or burned out. It complements ABA by supporting the whole family's emotional well-being, not just teaching skills to children.

Yes! Wave Family Services accepts most major commercial insurance plans, including United Healthcare and Optum, Aetna, Cigna, and Florida Blue. We do not accept Florida Medicaid at this time. Your child will also have a supervising BCBA who creates and updates the treatment plan, trains and supervises the therapist, meets with your family regularly, and ensures progress toward goals. In some cases, your child may work with a small team of therapists to provide flexibility with scheduling and ensure well-rounded support.

How involved will I be as a parent?

Very involved—and that's a good thing! Parent involvement is essential for your child's success. At Wave, we believe parents are the most important teachers in their child's life. You'll be involved through parent coaching sessions where we teach you strategies to use throughout the day, regular meetings to review progress and adjust goals, observing sessions to see what your child is learning, practicing at home to reinforce skills in everyday routines, and collaborating on goals so therapy aligns with your family's priorities.
